Character Profiles

Brief character profiles to help you keep everyone straight.

The Hilton Household

Roberta (Bobbie) Hilton

The story is narrated by an elderly Bobbie. She begins her tale when she was eight years old with the event that changed her life— being sent to school.

Mrs Hilton.

Bobbie’s mother is a lady of high society in the Highlands. Her family were social climbers and sent her to the best school they could afford to help her in life. She made a good marriage and she and her husband were both only children they were the sole heirs of their parents’ inheritances. Sadly Mrs Hilton inherited her mothers low fertility and despite all their hopes she only ever managed to carry one child.

Though Mrs Hilton is so involved in society and is constantly attending meetings and holding events she doesn’t really have any close friends in the highlands. The high society people accept her because of her money and her husband but she can’t call any of the ladies a bosom friend. Her best friend in life was Carla Cooper, her roommate from school. Sadly she passed away from the fever many years ago, but Mrs Hilton has kept up a friendship with her older brother and his wife though she has not seen them in person for seven years before the story starts.

Captain Hillton.

Bobbie’s father holds an important post in the navy. He is well respected in society for his many daring and brave deeds at sea but also for his compassion and high sense of honour. He is an all-round good man. The first time he saw his now wife was across a dance floor. He turned to his companion and said “See that beauty? I’m going to marry her.”

And he did.

Miss Brown.

Miss Brown is Bobbie’s governess and comes from a respectable Palain family. Bobbie has had a few run-ins with Miss Brown but on the whole got along with her very well. Miss Brown leaves the family when Bobbie leaves for school and Bobbie makes her promise to notify her of her new address as soon as she’s settled into her new position.

Mary.

Mary is Bobbie’s more senior nursery maid. She doesn’t say much, keeps herself to herself and doesn’t believe in poking one’s nose where it doesn’t belong.

Elen.

Elen is Bobbie’s more junior nursery maid and has worked for the family since she was just ten years old when Bobbie was born. There are few children in the upper society of the Highlands where Bobbie lives and none her age so Elen was the closest thing Bobbie had to a best friend. Elen has always been inquisitive and loves gossip but is a good, honest girl and always very kind.

Nanny.

Nanny oversees the running of the nursery.

Bobbie’s Class

Josephine (Jo) Cox.

Screenshot-125 (2)

Jo is one of nine children. She has two sisters and five (yes, five!) brothers. Her mother came from quite a wealthy, respected family and her father worked himself up through the classes. He is a very hard worker and manages to send all of his children to good schools but they have to cut a few corners in their domestic life to do so.

Jo’s family live on a large property in semi-country territory. During the holidays the children usually run free in the apple orchard or the small woods nearby and Jo has grown to love joining her brothers in their rough games.

Jo has always been overlooked a little bit. She isn’t the smartest or the prettiest of her siblings and she certainly isn’t the best behaved. Though she does try at her lessons things have a habit of getting on top of her and extra prep “appears out of nowhere” so she never makes the progress she would like.

What Jo does like, is a bit of fun. Sometimes when it seems too long from one holiday to the next she can go a bit stir crazy at school. She never means to be bad or naughty but sometimes her games have a habit of getting her (and her friends) into awful scrapes.

Henriette (Henri) Joans.

Henri was born in Fraitessa into a wealthy family. Her father was third son to Lord Joans who is still very much involved in society and still holds a seat in the house of lords.

She is the youngest of three children having an older sister who is recently married and an older brother who is still yet to marry.

Her best friend is Jo and the two of them used to be roommates until they were split up for getting into too much trouble. Henri likes to have a bit of fun but will almost always defer to the rules and is often the voice of reason to Jo’s schemes. She keeps her own council and is often the girl whom others confide in.

Mariah Luxum.

Mariah was born to both wealth and status. Her father holds a seat in the house of lords where he is very influential and he owns a company which requires him to sit back and watch the money come rolling in while other people do the work for him. He has branches in all the world’s major cities but most of his factories are located in far reaching places, such as Freedonia, where he can get cheaper labour. He spends most of his time at his gentleman’s club smoking fine cigars and socializing with the other gentlemen there.

Her mother went to the finest finishing school, did a year in Freedonia as a missionary then settled down and got married where she spends her time moving in all the right circles in high society Fraitessa. She attends balls, gala’s and luncheons. She is on lady’s committees and findraisers where they talk about helping all the poor starving children of the world by sending them cosmetics or hairdressers. She is completely out of touch with the common person. Mariah is her only daughter, she loves her to pieces and does all she can to ensure Mariah grows up a proper lady of society.

Mariah was reluctant to go to Lady D’Winter’s school. She she wanted to go to another establishment which was essentially a school to get you ready for finishing school but her father insisted that she get some form of common education. Mariah, having no sisters at home was lonely so they decided that tutors and govenesses weren’t the way to go. Her mother told her that she was being sent to Lady D’Winter’s school to help build character and she must bear it as well as she could.

Mariah is a snob, a bully and everything else. She has her mother wrapped around her little finger and her mother is a major financial contributer to the school. Needless to say, Lady D’Winter ensures Mariah is kept happy.

Valerie.
